BIGGEST
SMITH RIVER FLYROD SALMON LANDED BY GUEST OF BEACH HOUSE
This photo is of a guest at the Battery Point Beach House with his fly rod
record Smith River Chinook Salmon. The fish weighed 61 and a half pounds!
It required more than two hours to subdue from the 8-foot pram shown in
the back of the pickup. These big Chinook may run the Smith River from September
until January on their way to their annual spawning grounds. These gravel
beds are known as "redds" and are prepared for egg laying by the female
or "hen" salmon. Males inconsistently referred to as "bucks", compete to
fertilize the eggs. All of them die after spawning, unlike the steelhead,
which may return two or more times. Most of the tributary creeks and forks
to the Smith are ideal for spawning, which also occurs in the main river;
that is always closed to angling above the mouth of Patrick's Creek for
reproductive purposes. |
